Recipient of the 2018 North Carolina Heritage Award, Asha Bala is deeply committed to use the transformative power of Dance to touch as many lives as possible. To take the rich tradition of Bharata Natyam and expand its technical parameters to speak to the times we live in. An MFA in Bharata Natyam and MA in Modern Dance, she combines thirty years teaching in high school, universities and communities as Director Leela School of Dance.

The Language of Indian Dance

Expose students to basic rhythms and movements of classical Indian dance form Bharata Natyam! Students will learn about the dance style’s origins, other dance practices throughout India, and how intentional gestures provide symbolic meaning. Asha expertly guides groups through a short dance piece that they will be able to perform at the end of the session.

Max Participants: 25

Duration: 60-90 minutes 

Special Requirements: Access to a projector and sound, a large clean space where students can dance.
