Pricing for Profit-Pricing Your Work

Virtual – Join Tiffany Coley and Cynthia Deis for this virtual workshop where you’ll learn how to abandon the idea of the starving artist and make a profit with your artwork. This class will cover the details of a profit-driven pricing strategy for artists. You’ll discuss pricing for your artwork or art services, wholesale vs. retail pricing, how to identify productive hours and how to approach pricing to achieve a desired income level from your work. The class will work through pricing using a business case study and the details of pricing. You will leave with a method to price your work, including a downloadable file that can be used when pricing your own work.

Cynthia Deis is a Raleigh-based artist, writer and arts educator with experience in a variety of mediums. Her background as a production jewelry designer and retail store owner provides her with an artist’s understanding of business and entrepreneurial issues. Certified in REAL Entrepreneurship and REAL Craft courses, she also teaches and consults on pricing, studio layout, and email marketing with artists, craftspeople and small arts organizations. Learn more about Cynthia’s work at her website here.

Tiffany Coley is a jeweler and silversmith with a background in tech business. With over 15 years of teaching and craft sales experience, she sells her work to galleries and stores around the US and works out of her studio in Durham, NC. Tiffany has a deep knowledge of selling crafts at both retail and wholesale as well as how to create a focused product line. Tiffany is certified in the REAL Entrepreneurship and REAL Craft courses and consults with artists about pricing, production and sales. Digital Sales and Selling for Artists

Virtual – Visual 2-D artists learn about the process of selling digital versions of their work, from picking a print-on-demand platform to how a traffic funnel works to help you sell your work. This class is for you if you are looking for additional ways to sell your work outside of galleries and in-person marketplaces and shows.

Ryan Fox is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society as well as numerous state and regional societies. Ryan has won awards in The American Watercolor Society (AWS), Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors, Missouri Watercolor Society, Georgia Watercolor Society (GWS), and Watercolor Society of North Carolina juried shows. Artist and Performer Website Review – IN PERSON class at Durham Art Council

In-person – Do you have a website for your art business? Is it working for you? Join us for this in-person website review. You’ll learn about site best-practices from artist and marketing professional, Jackie Sanders, and then have your website reviewed by multiple people. You’ll leave with a list of quick fixes for your site issues, or ways to improve sales on your site. You will want to bring either a wifi-enabled laptop, an ipad or a mobile phone. This event is appropriate for visual and performing artists. 

Jackie Sanders is an abstract geometric artist based in downtown Raleigh, NC on a mission to
transform life’s mundane moments into memorable experiences. She currently has a community facing
art studio in downtown Raleigh, NC at Artspace where she shows the creative

Selling In a Big Way – Wholesale Sales for Artists

Virtual – Are you an artist who wants to sell your work outside the gallery and art market areas? Selling wholesale – directly to gift stores or interior designers or others – might be a good fit for your work. In this course taught by Cynthia Deis, an artist with experience selling wholesale, you’ll learn about the various issues confronting artists who want to sell their work to a wider market. The course discusses studio set up, planning, sales and legal issues around selling wholesale. You’ll leave with a checklist you can implement for your own work if you decide to explore wholesale markets.

Getting The Grant for Artists

Virtual – Would your art career benefit from a grant? Learn how to best prepare grant applications with discussion of how to read a grant application, submission best-practices and innovative and novel ideas for making an application stand out. Led by experienced performing artist, Shana Tucker, this program is for performing and visual arts professionals. You’ll hear about the ways grants are structured and the ways to best present yourself and your work to grant committees.

Shana Tucker is a dynamic singer-songwriter, cellist, composer, teaching artist and arts leader. She is dedicated to building connections through candid song-storytelling and equitable arts education. As the founding artist/owner of ChamberSoul, LLC, Shana brings value to her community through performance, teaching and arts advocacy, creating opportunities that utilize artistry and leadership skills to inspire and guide artists to be more insightful and intentional in their creative processes. You Only Get One Pie – Strategic Planning for Artists 

Virtual – Literary, visual, craft and performing artists are guided through the process of defining clear and achievable business goals, with a focus on understanding the unique challenges and opportunities within the art industry, helping artists identify their personal and professional aspirations. Class will cover essential strategies, providing a comprehensive toolkit for artists to advance their careers

Jennifer A. Reis, assistant professor of arts administration and entrepreneurship at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, is a creative entrepreneur, artist, educator and curator with 25 years of experience in arts business and administration. Additionally, she is a textile and mixed media artist who creates intensively hand-worked, ornately beaded, and embellished paper doll icons on cloth using traditional and alternative materials. Learn more about her work here.

This grant is provided by “Durham Culture & Arts – Invest to Restart” a program of the Durham Arts Council supported by the City of Durham American Rescue Plan funds. Durham Arts Council will distribute funds through December 2025, to help support individual artists and arts and culture-focused nonprofit organizations and businesses as they rebuild, recover, and grow.
