Sarah Council is a choreographer, teaching artist and the artistic director of Sarah Council Dance Projects (SCDP), a contemporary modern dance company based in Charlotte, NC. SCDP’s education program Move Create and Collaborate: k-12 arts-integrated movement residencies and PD workshops, was implemented in several Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Schools and featured at Wake County Arts Council’s Arts Integration Institute. Her Dancing the Poem Workshop Series is supported by of the Arts and Science Council’s Culture Blocks program and Charlotte Mecklenburg Public Libraries. Council also works with the Wolf Trap Foundation (DC, NJ, NC, VA) and is a current A+ Fellow.

Residency Dancing the Poem

GRADES: Pre-K – 12, adults

DESCRIPTION: This creative dance and poetry writing residency will engage students in an exploration of the poetic form through movement. Directed by dance educator, Sarah Council, students will discover that both poetry and dance are powerful modes of expression that utilize imagery, emotion, and rhythm. During the residency students will:

 Study a work of poetry; observing descriptive language, imagery, quality, and rhythm and then explore these ideas through movement

● Create original choreography inspired by these explorations

● Perform and observe these small group dances within the classroom/online setting

● Craft a work of collaborative poetry inspired by their experience

Max Participants: 25

Duration:  60 minute sessions minimum  of 3 days and maximum of 5 days

Special Requirements: Large open space free of furniture with access to an outlet.

Fee:  $312.50 per session

Workshop Dancing lifecycles for Educators : Using Movement and Dance Making to Investigate our Ever-changing World!

 GRADES: For Educators 

DESCRIPTION: Learn how to explore the cycles of plant life, animal life and weather through movement and dance making with teaching artist and choreographer, Sarah Council. In this professional development workshop you will experience movement integration strategies that offer easy ways to explore science curriculum with your classrooms through dance. Working collaboratively, you will create original choreography inspired by these science themes. At the end of our time together, you will leave with practical tools and a clear plan to get your students moving as they investigate our ever-changing world.

 Max Participants: 25

 Duration: 2 Hours 

Special Requirements: Open space free of large furniture. Chairs available if needed. Access to electrical outlet.
