Relaxing In Art

Maria is a mixed media and fiber artist with a passion for art journaling. She enjoys the freedom of using everyday household supplies “just to see what happens.” Her creative practice and business Relaxing In Art, is a word play of her nickname, ‘Ria. It serves as a reminder that creating art can be a form of relaxing. As a teaching artist, she stresses playfulness to reflect, relate and release to create. By applying critical thinking skills, this residency will have students thinking outside the box to use everyday items to create art. This residency is designed to introduce students to mixed media and explore different ways to use it in their art. Creative writing is also used to encourage students to write out their thoughts and experiences of working with the materials and respond to questions of what-ifs, what personal expression means to them, and how personal art and writing collide.

Max Participants: 25

Duration:

  • Workshop: 45-60 minutes
  • Residency: Minimum 3 sessions needed for residency; 45-60 minutes per session

Special Requirements: An art room is most preferred to accommodate students with access to electrical outlets, large tables for students to work at, and adequate sink/water source to accommodate rinse buckets. A regular classroom can be used with modified supplies; however, a sink/water source nearby is still needed. A space to allow work to dry is required. Since students will work with small amounts of paint and glue, I ask that students wear older clothing they are allowed to get dirty or aprons.

Fee: $187.50 per workshop and residency session plus materials (varies by project)
