Mallarmé has presented outstanding chamber music concerts for 36 years. Our teaching artists, skilled in teaching one-on-one and in groups, come from area universities. Most have masters or doctoral degrees in music performance or education. We match our artists’ skills and experience with the demographics of the class. Our programs are intimate in nature, giving students sense of what it is like to be a musician and to be an intrinsic part of the program.

Performance Instrument Families: Sensational Strings from Bach to Bluegrass

GRADES: Kindergarten – 12

This program is an introduction to the string family with a concert performance from Bach to Bluegrass! Participants will see the evolution of the string quartet through musical eras, starting in the Baroque era with J.S. Bach’s “Air on the G String” and works by Haydn, Beethoven, and Debussy, to Mark O’Connor’s arrangement of “Fisher’s Hornpipe.” As students travel through “musical history,” they will also learn about European and American history. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn and sing the song “Freight Train” by Elizabeth Cotten.

For grades 6-12, music and conversation about instrument and music technicality can be chosen to meet the current abilities and repertoire of the students.

A planning meeting will take place before the concert to determine exact repertoire and conversation topics to meet classroom needs.
