Youth Workshops for Art Explorations (Ages 5-9) Get creative during these afterschool enrichment workshops by using your imagination and exploring a variety of materials. We will have fun creating art using a different media each week. Take one or take them all! These classes will take place outdoors at the Durham Arts building. Materials supplied. ![]() ![]() Arts News + Exhibits Emerging Artist Grants are NOW OPEN and Expanded Thanks to the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation!! DAC will be awarding $20,000 in Emerging Artist grants this year thanks to generous support from the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, the Anika James Foundation, DAC Annual Arts Fund donors and partner support from Orange, and Person Counties.
Applications for the DAC’s Emerging Artists Grant program are now open. Artists who live in Durham, Orange, Chatham, Granville and Person Counties are eligible to apply for these professional development project grants . Details on the program and links to applications are on the DAC website.

Public Art Request For Qualifications from Durham County Artists Request for Qualifications – Durham County Artists – Issue Date: September 13, 2021 Project Opportunity: The Durham Convention and Arts Complex (DCAC – Durham Convention Center, Carolina Theater, The Armory and the Durham Arts Council) seeks Ground Plane/Surface Art, Sculptural Elements, Lighting Installations for the Durham Convention Center/Carolina Theatre Plaza The DCAC is seeking qualifications from artists or artist teams to transform the Durham Convention Center/Carolina Theatre Plaza through creative placemaking elements. This is a Request for Qualifications only. Finalists selected from RFQ will be asked to prepare and present proposals. Site plans, maps more details will be provided to assist finalists in proposal preparation. Artists/Artist Team will be asked to design a system of art elements that visually connect the four buildings into a cohesive group so that it can be used and marketed as the Durham Convention and Arts Complex. The DCAC wants the art elements to include sculptural elements, mosaics, and/or other surface art, and strategic light installations. DAC Partner + Grantee News THE I REMEMBER PROJECT A Cassilhaus residency in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, October 2021 that will result in production of a participatory multi-generational community public art work. With the help of your community, using donations of photographic negatives and slides, visual artist Elizabeth Stone will weave and sew together personal narratives from multiple generations into a large sculptural art piece.
This collaborative record of the community’s identity will be created with the artist at scheduled “sewing bees” encouraging participants to pause and reconsider the many perspectives of a shared experience, sparked by family photographs.
DAC will serve as a drop off location for photographic negatives and slides. Between September 14-October 7, you can drop off materials at the DAC Terrace on Tuesday, Wednesday,Thursday between 11 am – 3 pm. For more information contact Elizabeth Stone.
Welcome to the Family Saturday Series!
The Family Saturday Series at The Carolina Theatre is a family-based curated program for all ages. Our goal is to provide high quality, affordable arts experiences to introduce young audiences to the magic of live performances, music, storytelling, and magic!
This year, we are offering a virtual viewing option for performances occurring in the Fall. If you choose the virtual option, a link will be emailed to you before the show. The performance will go live at 11:00 a.m. on the day of the show and will be available for viewing for 24 hours. Virtual tickets will be available on the individual show’s web page.
