Kids Make Comics with Dave McDonald

Dave McDonald began his career in television as a producer/director/writer in children’s programming. He has written scripts for theatrical productions (Scooby Doo musical shows/Paramount Parks), toured as a puppeteer with Grey Seal Puppets and is the author/illustrator of the graphic novel, Hamster SAM: ODD-ventures in Space! (2013). For nearly 15 years “Mr. Dave” has been an accredited teaching artist with the South Carolina Arts Commission and the United Arts Council of Raleigh & Wake County, NC. He’s a featured kids cartooning & comics video instructor on the educational apps Epic! and Highbrow and on his YouTube channel, Dave McDonald Art. ARTS-CURRICULUM INTEGRATION: VISUAL ARTS

Programs

Assembly Program: Kids Make Comics with Dave McDonald
GRADES: 2-5 Every student succeeds in this lively 45-minute interactive cartooning program! The artist begins the program with a PowerPoint presentation that introduces students to comics and graphic novels. An interactive drawing demonstration follows; students draw along with “Mr. Dave” step by step using simple shapes to create super characters. A story adventure shows how writing can be just as fun as drawing. Students bring paper, pencil and their imaginations to this program and will leave with tons of ideas for creating their own characters and comic stories! Max Participants: 200 Duration: 45 minutes per session Special Requirements: A gym/multipurpose room is best. Materials needed include a microphone, laptop/screen. The artist will bring a jump drive with PowerPoint on it. Workshop Fee: Two program sessions (scheduled back-to-back): $1,187.50 Three program sessions (scheduled back-to-back): $1,656.25
Residency Kids Make Comics with Dave McDonald
GRADES: 3-5 During this 4-day residency the artist will work with up to 5 classrooms per day, for 4 days in a row, in 45-minute class periods. The artist will guide students through a comics-making project that, once completed, can be displayed and/or assessed for a grade. The comics project is defined as a full-page (9” x 12” art paper) multi-panel comic, drawn using pencil and (optionally) ink pens. Each student works independently and is responsible for developing their own original characters, writing their own storyline, and creating their own comic, guided by the artist. Max Participants: 25 Duration: 45-minute session per day, 4 days Special Requirements: Classroom with Smart board & laptop for daily PowerPoint presentations. Space in front of class for artist to set up easel for daily drawing demonstrations. Fee: $2,500
