Erim Akpan is a storyteller and jester who delights in weaving arts with curriculum content to help students build skills in critical thinking, literacy, and social-emotional learning. Her stories have been seen live and virtually by over 45,000 students across the United States. A prolific writer, she has amassed over 40 publications and currently serves as a staff writer for Chatham Life and Style Magazine. Erim is an A+ Fellow for the NC Arts Council’s A+ Schools Program and holds a Teaching Artist Certificate from NC Central University. Performance Royally Responsible Social Studies: The Power of Good Decisions & Proactive Problem-Solving
GRADES: K-5 & 6-8 Have you ever faced a sticky, tricky, icky situation where you didn’t know what to do? “Royally Responsible” teaches students a simple repeatable process for making good decisions to solve tough problems. Students play the role of fictional (and historical) leaders facing difficult decisions. The performance is highly adaptable to curriculum standards (for example, History & English Language Arts) and can be aligned with learning goals as requested, in collaboration with classroom teachers. Max Participants: 400 (dividing by grade levels recommended) Duration: 45 minutes Special Requirements: Performance requires a sound system with a microphone and speaker, and preferably on a stage. Auditoriums, gymnasiums, or outdoor settings provide additional challenges for effective participation, but accommodations can be made. Single Performance Fee: $500 Two Performances Fee: $937.50
Workshop The Kingdom of Choices: Mastering Proactive Problem-Solving on the Path to Leadership
GRADES: K-5 & 6-8 How do leaders solve problems when the stakes are high? What if you had to make a decision that could change eve-rything? In “The Kingdom of choices”, students explore a step-by-step process for navigating difficult decisions, then create and role-play scenarios based on historical and fictional leaders. Students will collaboratively tackle challenges and discover strategies for problem-solving when they face icky, sticky, tricky situations in their own lives. The workshop is flexible and can be customized to incorporate various cultural contexts and align with classroom objectives in subjects like History, English Language Arts, and Social Studies. Max Participants: 30 per class (Max 4 workshops in one day) Duration: 50 minutes Special Requirements: Artist and students will need open space to perform in groups of 5-6. In a standard classroom, desks may be arranaged to accommodate space requirements. Space must have a whiteboard, projector, or smartboard.
