“Teaching is more than a passion for Diali Cissokho; it’s his birthright” (John Hunter, Chatham Record). “Griot” Diali Cissokho – vocalist, percussionist, korist, and composer – hails from a long lineage of musicians, historically charged with storytelling and aural history. He has performed & taught in Africa, Europe, and the U.S.. With lyrics in Manding, Wolof, French, and English, Diali immerses audiences in stories of ancient and modern Africa.

Programs

Performance The Griot Experience: Songs, Stories, and Movement
GRADES: Kindergarten – 12 Students learn self-portraiture art techniques while thinking critically about identity race and gender. Together they will make a work of art that celebrates individuality and collective identity. Choose from drawing, painting, or printmaking to create a collaborative installation. Max Participants: 400 Duration: 45-60 minutes Special Requirements: Stage in large multi-purpose room with microphones and outlets for amplification (provided by artist); access at least 30 minutes before the performance to set up Single Performance Fee: $625 Two Performances Fee: $1,000
Residency Djembe Beat: Exploring African Rhythm
GRADES: 3-12 Students will learn several traditional rhythms and call-and-response songs while exploring the joys and challenges of cooperative learning. Students will develop listening skills, focus, and a sense of pride in their cooperative accomplishments in this high-energy musical experience! Max Participants: 25 students (larger groups can be arranged if the school has additional drums) Duration: 45-60 minute per class. 2 days minimum needed for residency. Residency length/days and number of classes are negotiable Special Requirements: Space large enough to accommodate a circle of chairs for student drummers and instructor, assistance carrying and setting up drums helpful but not required (up to 25 drums provided by instructor for use during residency) Fee: $150 per hour/per class
