DAC Accepts National Arts and Humanities Month Proclamation |
In accepting the National Arts and Humanities Month Proclamation from Mayor Leonardo Williams on October 21, Geraud Staton, Vice President of the Durham Arts Council Board of Trustees, emphasized the vital role arts and culture play in Durham’s growth and well-being. Emerging from the pandemic, Durham’s vibrant arts sector is not only recovering, but has also demonstrated significant economic impact. A recent Arts & Economic Prosperity Study revealed that the nonprofit arts and culture industry in Durham generates over $233 million annually, supports 3,246 jobs, and contributes $27.1 million to local, state, and federal government revenues. Staton highlighted the importance of this sector in enriching the community, boosting tourism, and fostering a sense of cultural pride.
Staton also praised the creative contributions of local artists, writers, filmmakers, and cultural organizations, whose programs in music, dance, theatre, and the visual arts strengthen the community’s shared experiences. In FY24, Durham Arts Council is proud to have provided arts experiences to 627,562 people, and awarded $883,256 in cash grants and facility grants to 136 arts and cultural organizations and artists. Across our community, these artists and arts and culture organizations are vital to strengthening community engagement, our well-being, our shared humanity and joy.

“In my basement studio, I love the way a lump of clay can be transformed into any number of things. Lately, I have been inspired by animals. I cut the animals out of paper and after several processes they emerge as galloping horses, running deer, smiling cats and a number of other animals. I also make my own stamps that are inspired by nature and ethnic designs which I use to decorate my hand built mugs, bowls, vases and more.” |
|
“I’m a decorative and functional potter. My outdoor ceramic art includes tree faces, birdhouses, flowers and more. I also create mugs, platters, bowls and other functional items. I love to texture my work with a variety of handmade and commercial stamps which I impress into the clay.” |
