Seeking Visual Arts Instructors for Summer Camp 2024
Durham Arts Council (DAC) holds eleven weeks of camp each summer, including a series of Cultural Camps with Visual and Performing Tracks for ages 7-12. In each Cultural Camp session, campers will take a journey on a fun and in-depth exploration of the arts and culture of a particular country. Each session culminates in a visual art exhibition and performance on the final Friday.
We are seeking a contracted Visual Art Instructor who has several years of experience as an arts educator or teaching artist. Our preference is to contract with one teacher who can teach all three Visual Track areas: 2-D dry and wet media, as well as 3-D sculpture as detailed in the camp schedule list below. A Bachelor of Fine Arts or arts related teaching degree is preferred but not required. Camp instructor positions are independent contract positions that pay $27/hour.
Applicants must be available from 7:45am – 3:15pm during the following Cultural Camp weeks, Monday through Friday:
June 17 – 28 (2 weeks, no camp June 19) – Jammin’ Jamaica: 3-D Sculpture (ex: ceramics, found object sculpture, papier mache)
July 8 – 19 (2 weeks) – Fabulous Finland: 2-D Dry Media (ex: drawing, collage, fiber arts such as weaving and embroidery)
July 29 – August 2 (1 week) – Festive Philippines: 2-D Wet Media (ex: painting, printmaking, mixed media)
The Visual Track will be divided by age into three groups of 15 campers each, and the groups will rotate through all three areas of visual art throughout each day. Supplies are provided by the DAC. Camp Instructors design their own curriculum and prep all activities.
Optional opportunities available for subbing other weeks of camp or co-leading the extended day program, Afternoon Adventures, from 3-5:30pm.
Please submit a brief cover letter, resume, and three professional references to Wendy Leigh, Arts Education Assistant Manager, at wleigh@durhamarts.org. For qualified applicants, an interview will be scheduled.
