View Freeman's work in the DAC galleries for "Our House" show
"Thinking about my path to the Durham Arts Council I am struck by how natural a path it has been. I began shooting pictures on film and developing printing and my own pictures at age 12. Working at a camera store beginning at 14, I was able to set up a darkroom in my parent's basement and added developing and printing color photographs by age 16.I attended college at the Rhode Island School of Design and received a BFA in Photography and Filmmaking. Since then, I have worked as a commercial photographer in fashion, portraiture and fine art."
Growing up in Hyde Park Chicago I was from an early age involved with the “Community Arts Center" it was here that I felt I belonged, learning, teaching and growing among a group of artists. When I first discovered the Durham Arts Council it was a natural fit. Being a photographer since age 12 I have acquired a wealth of photographic knowledge, through formal schooling, experience, workshops etc. I enjoy sharing my experiences with photography with others."

Call for Artists for "Latitudes in Afro-Latinx Art" |
The Afro-Latinx diaspora spans latitudes. Latitude refers both to a place and a celestial object in relation to the equatorial mark we humans invented. It is an imaginary line around the globe. It occupies both north and south imaginations. In inviting Latitudes, we are inviting artists to submit artworks and practices that engage with the Afro-Latinx expressions in their diversities, expansions, and imaginations. Across the globe and across the skies, under and above the oceans.
The exhibition is a collaboration between Casa Azul of Greensboro and The African American Atelier and will take place in the African American Atelier gallery in the Greensboro Cultural Center in September/October of 2023 in North Carolina.

Extra-Spectral
April 7 to June 4
Extra-spectral colors cannot be evoked with a single wavelength of light, but rather by a combination of wavelengths. From the technical challenge of re-creating color to the ultra-personal choice of which hues to include to the fact that, as Josef Albers noted, we can never even see color as it physically is, making it the “most relative medium in art,” the relationship of the Artist to color is as complex as possible.
This exhibit highlights several NC-based Artists that, on the surface, use colors that are “extra” (which is where their commonality ends) to evoke their intent through a combination of this color with forms and imagery as well as the concepts embedded in color’s many identities. Artists Jane Cheek, Jerstin Crosby, Zach Storm, Tonya Solley Thornton and Leif Zikade all require color to play a primary role in their work and their relationship to an audience.
